Resistance Comes with Decision

by Joy Randall

Why is it we don’t meet resistance of all sorts before we make a decision to pursue a goal or dream but after?  Why does it become harder after we decide, not before?  Beat resistance!

Even more important, why do we think deciding on pursuing a goal or dream automatically means the way is easy with no obstacles?  I won’t go into why we have this expectation today, but let’s just say we have been trained.

Let’s walk through the process of making a decision and reaching out goal.  It begins in our minds and hearts, where something grabs us, big or small, whether it is to help orphans, build an international business, pay off all our debt, or improve our relationships with our family.  Nothing can happen until it gets out of our minds and onto paper and specific steps are added, which leads to taking action to achieve a goal.

The two main places we meet resistance is getting the goal/vision/dream out of our heads, and moving toward our goal.  While it is still in our heads, there is confusion and inactivity.  Read more about the steps you can take to get it out of your head and onto paper.  Today, let’s address what happens after we decide and write it down and meet resistance!

Resistance to action unusually shows up in three places of our lives:

·         Our minds

·         People

·         Circumstances

Our minds:  It is only after we decide to change, move toward a goal, or take action that we meet resistance in our minds.  Thoughts of failure, what ifs, possible catastrophes, etc. swirl around with one sole purpose – to keep our eyes off the goal, prize, or seemingly impossible dream.

What do you do when you are in a car or on a bike and want to go to a certain place? You keep your eye on the road – not the curb, the side roads, interesting houses or scenery.  If you did, you would find yourself starting to steer into what you focus on.

It is the same with thoughts – what we allow to enter our minds, start to entertain, build up stories and possible scenarios for – this is what we will get.  What can we do?  Each time a thought comes that would take you away from your goal or dream, identify it, reject it, and put in the opposite.  Remember, what you focus on is what you get – DECIDE what you want to get and focus there.

People: The second place resistance comes is from those closest to us, usually well-meaning, for our protection.  Just the other day I got a voice mail from my Mom, who was thinking I was on the brink of her idea of starvation – eating Spam!  While her concern was for my welfare, what she conveyed was the impossibility of my dream, stepping out in faith and persisting despite what is visible with my eyes.

I had a choice to make: Would I agree with my Mom that I am a loser, my dream is not possible, and I would starve if I continued on this path OR reject what she said, giving the benefit of the doubt that she meant it for my health and welfare?  You have that same choice to make, each time you encounter resistance through a person.

Circumstances: The third place of resistance is our circumstances, what we see immediately in front of us.

So you are driving a car or a bike down the road, you no longer focus on the side roads, the distractions, but do you focus on the surface of the road right in front of you?  Looking down? Or do you keep your eyes focused further down the road?  If you want to get to your destination, you will focus on what is down the road.

So it is with our circumstances.  We can focus on where we are right now, or focus on where we are going, knowing that we can and will get there. One of my favorite quotes is from Thomas Edison which has been proven true over and over in my life:

"Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up."  Thomas Alva Edison
